This practice is not modern. Even the ancient Greeks traveled over Mediterranean to a small territory Epidauria which was considered under influence of the healing god Asklepios.
Getting treated in sanatoriums and spas during Victorian times and even later, in the 20th century was also an early form of medical tourism.
